Marti, Benedikt dit Aretius · 1589

for a certain poet elegantly sang:
Horace in the Art of Poetry.
He has carried every point, who has mixed the useful with the sweet,
By delighting the reader, and at the same time instructing him.
Therefore, receive this earnest with a glad face: which, however, does not free from debt, but rather renders the debtor more bound. If I learn that it has not displeased you, I will not doubt that I have done a thing very useful to the Church and most grateful to all the pious. For we make nothing of the bite of those who slander, reject, or suspect the writings of D. Aretius as depraved. We know that everything is faithfully described from his own autograph which has hitherto been published in his name: and which we will publish for all the remaining books of the New Testament next (God favoring). May the Lord Jesus, Best and Greatest, always be with you, protect you with His spirit, and always defend you with His protection. At Bern of the Swiss, March 10, 1589.
