For even if the matter itself speaks, and nothing can be added to your dignity by my recommendation, it is still helpful to praise virtue wherever it is seen. This is the one reason why most mortals are drawn to embrace the same. But there is a third thing that occurs to me, which holds me most closely bound to you, namely your kindness and your altogether remarkable humanity toward all those devoted to literature. Since, by the grace of God the Best and Greatest, I am counted among their number, it is fair that I respond to your affection, especially since I have been honored by you to such a degree that you have wished to accept me into this city, as if into a most peaceful harbor, so that I might provide you with that service which is essential for preserving the health of the whole human race.
