If you spot an error, have a suggestion, or just want to say hello — we’d love to hear from you.

here he rejects the first error and approaches the truth: whether he is able, according to the Apostle, to put off the old man according to the former conversation which is corrupted according to the desires of error, renouncing impiety and worldly desires. Secondly, for that is Augustine in De poenitentia On Penance. And he assumes the canon in the same place in the chapter "Omnis qui iam" Everyone who already: once constituted as the arbiter of his own will, when he approaches the sacrament of the faithful, namely baptism, unless he repents of his old life—the gloss says: that is, the sins that make a man old—he cannot initiate the new life. From this penance he adds: only infants are immune; for they are not yet able to use free will.
Thirdly, for the same is Augustine in a certain epistle. And he assumes the canon in the letter "C" referring to a chapter heading: "Agant homines ante baptismum penitentiam" Let men do penance before baptism, that is, penitence for prior sins, so that they may be baptized as it is written in the Acts of the Apostles. Peter speaking to the Jews and saying: "Do penance, so that each one of you may be baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ." And the gloss says in that place: it is not a precept, but a monition. Thus, in these days, there will be a remembrance of the life of the adult Jew, and his grave sins in which he could probably have fallen will be recalled to memory; the gravity is declared so that he may detest them. And if he wishes, after baptism, he confesses in those things in which he felt himself guilty to a legitimate priest, not out of necessity, but so that he may receive greater grace and information about those and other things or circumstances: how in the future he might more abundantly and clearly confess and repent. Furthermore, in those days, he informs the church of his condition: if he is free, a slave, married, a usurer, from whose information or with what intention he wants to return to the church; whether he is prepared to restore usuries or relinquish all his things which he has from usury, and similar things according to the advices given earlier and the prudence of the instructor.
