any sacrament that the person of the minister who confers the sacrament does so with the intention of doing what the Church does. If any of these three is lacking—that is, if there is not the due form of words, if there is not the due matter, if the minister of the sacrament does not intend to perform the sacrament—the sacrament is not perfected. The effect of the sacrament is also hindered by the fault of the recipient, for example, if one approaches in pretense and not with a heart prepared to receive the sacrament. For although such a person may receive the sacrament, they do not receive the effect of the sacrament, that is, the grace of the Holy Spirit, because, as is said in Wisdom 1: "The Holy Spirit of discipline will flee from the deceitful." On the contrary, however, some have not yet received the sacrament who nonetheless receive the effect of the sacrament because of the devotion they have toward the sacrament, which they possess in vow or desire. There are, however, some things proper to certain sacraments. For some of these imprint a character, that is, a certain spiritual sign distinguishing them from others, such as in the sacrament of baptism, in the sacrament of order, and in the sacrament of confirmation. And such sacraments are never repeated upon the same person. For one who is baptized should never again be baptized further. Nor should one who is confirmed be confirmed again. Nor should one who is ordained be ordained again. Because the character which is imprinted in such sacraments is indelible. In other sacraments, however, a character is not imprinted upon the one receiving them, and therefore they can be repeated as far as the person receiving them is concerned, though not as far as the matter is concerned. For one may frequently receive the eucharist, frequently receive penance, frequently receive extreme unction, and frequently contract matrimony. Yet the same host should not be frequently consecrated, nor should the same oil of the sick be frequently blessed. There is also another difference, because some sacraments
