spiritual baptism. Against them, the Lord says in John 3: "Unless one has been born again of water and the Holy Spirit, etc." The second error was that of the Donatists, rejecting those who have been baptized by Catholics. Against them, it is said in Ephesians 4: "One faith, one baptism." And there is another error of theirs: for they say that a person existing in sin cannot baptize. Against them is John 1: "Upon whom you shall see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him, this is he who baptizes," that is, Christ. Whence a bad minister does not harm the person, neither in this nor in other sacraments, because it is Christ who is good and who interiorly perfects the sacrament. The fourth is the error of the Pelagians, who say that infants are baptized so that by regeneration they may be admitted as adopted into the kingdom of God, translated from good to better, not that these are renovated by being absolved from any evil of old obligation.

The second sacrament is that of confirmation, the matter of which is chrism made from oil, which signifies the brightness of conscience, and balsam, which signifies the odor of good reputation, blessed by a bishop. The form of this sacrament, however, is such:
I sign you with the sign of the cross and I confirm you with the chrism of salvation in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The minister of this sacrament is the bishop alone, for it is not permitted for priests to anoint the confirmands with chrism on the forehead. The effect of this sacrament is that in it the Holy Spirit is given for strength, just as He was given to the apostles on the day of Pentecost, so that, indeed, a Christian may boldly confess the name of Christ. And therefore the one to be confirmed is anointed on the forehead, where the seat of shame is, so that they may not blush to confess the name of Christ, and especially his cross, which is a scandal to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles. And for this reason, they are also signed with the sign of the cross.
