and united to his members, it follows that by this sacrament, for those who receive it worthily, grace is increased. Thus, therefore, in this sacrament, there is something which is a sacrament only, namely, the very species of bread and wine; and something which is both reality and sacrament, namely, the true body of Christ; and something which is signified only, namely, the unity of the mystical body, that is, the Church, which this sacrament signifies and causes. There have been many errors concerning this sacrament. The first of these is that of those who say that in this sacrament there is not the true body of Christ, but only figuratively. Of this error, Berengarius is said to have been a proponent. Against this, it is said in John 6:
"My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed."
The second is the error of the Artotyritae a sect offering bread and cheese, who offer in the sacrament bread and cheese, saying that from the first humans, offerings from the fruits of the earth and of sheep were celebrated. Against this is the fact that the Lord, the institutor of this sacrament, gave bread and wine to his disciples. The third error is that of the Cataphrygae a sect mentioned in early church history and the Pepuziani another name for the same group, who, from the blood of an infant which they extort from the whole of its body with tiny puncture wounds, as if they were performing their eucharist, mix it into flour and perform bread from it, which is more similar to the sacrifices of demons than to the sacrifices of Christ, according to that in the Psalm:
"They shed innocent blood, which they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan."
The fourth is the error of the Aquarii those who use only water, who offer only water in the sacrifices, when nevertheless in Proverbs 9 it is said from the mouth of Wisdom, which is Christ:
"Drink the wine which I have mixed for you."
The fifth is the error of the Ophitae serpent-worshippers, who, thinking the serpent to be Christ, have a snake accustomed to lick the bread with its tongue, and thus they sanctify it for themselves as if it were the eucharist. The sixth is the error of the Pepuziani, who give precedence to women so that they may be honored in the priesthood among them. The seventh is the error of the poor.
