But the master himself revokes from the emphyteota tenant of church or state lands, as above, regarding the right of emphyteusis, law 2, and from the usufructuary, as in the Digest concerning usufruct, if usufruct. But say the last position is accepted that the master may demand what the emphyteota tenant ought to have paid, since he himself is held to pay for the time, and thus the condition from this law.
c Voices, that is, the present ones, to whom it pertains to impose and demand, as above, title 1, in fiscal matters.

g Emoluments, that is, salaries.
h From each, place, census, which many provinces of the Greeks promised themselves to pay half of what they were accustomed to pay before, or half of the gold, which to God/Lord certainly seemed sufficient, whence it was not to be demanded in more.
i Province of the Greeks, that is, of those who promised.
k Promised, which was half as subjoined.
l Of them, the Macedonians or Greeks, that is, those who promised. Say that inspectors are not sent for the sake of imposing something extra. Such an inspection was made when, because of fertility, something over-indicted had to be imposed; for then more was demanded for the sake of tributes.
m Remainders, that is, the Greeks who promised something.
n Followed, the example of the Macedonians, that is, those Greeks who promised.
o Tributes, that is, to be paid, or that is the burden of tributes, and say half the gold, whence it is taken through, by argument, that a gold coin is the tribute of Caesar, but here among the Greeks, in others observe what is noted in the 'Rica', namely that the gold coin is whole, which is also gathered here, for if these are half, it is gathered that those pay the whole gold coin, and according to this it is not 'arra', see 'suscept.', law 'modios', and below, 8 collection of funds, paragraph, law 2, or say half of that which was paid before.
within a space of six months to all whom it concerns, who brought the accumulation of the remainder to the emperors who are the masters of the estate, for the exaction of the demand. The text appears to refer to the collection of tax arrears or fiscal obligations.
Voices which concern the collection of our treasury, if it is proven that they were negligent and sluggish, all emoluments which they received while placed in administration must be rendered.
They are compelled. Emperor.
Given from each province, the census which is demanded, which it was judged by your sublimity to be promised by them recently. Truly, no one hereafter shall approach the possessions of those who most fear the inspectors. The Macedonians, having followed the example of the rest, shall receive the tributes of half the quantity as they are known to have offered, but these which were part stated, nothing more is to be offered from themselves, a third part that is offered, let that be extolled.
p But these, namely certain special Macedonians.
q Suitable, thus, Digest concerning municipal and honorable, law 3, paragraph, president, and according to the custom of the equality of the gift, paragraph, since indeed, in the end, and take care that this is not understood in ordinary tributes, for when imminent necessities occur, something extraordinary is to be imposed on the provinces, and this is proven because patrimonial lands do not provide these thirds and halves, as below, concerning the collection of funds, paragraph, law 2. But ordinary tributes do so, as below, title 1, law 1, and below, title 11, law final, and paragraph 'sacrosanct', as above, concerning the holy, ecclesiastical, law 'sacrosanct church'.
r Rica, regarding indictments. I spoke of the double duty of patrimony as noted above, title 1, law 1, indictments; now he pursues the other, namely which are imposed on persons for patrimony, and because here it was said, to the provinces for individual lustra 5-year periods, first of gold, second of silver, and third of copper, as in the authentic, concerning collection, in the beginning, and below, concerning the lustrum, gold, collection 1, Rica. Therefore, he says 'indictment', and it is called this tribute 'over-indicted', as below, the same, law 1, because it is paid beyond the extraordinary canon which is imposed on things for individual lustra, and according to this say above, title 1, law 1, all entirely are after this, or there it is said that it is imposed on things when this wants to induce too much. Others say 'over-indicated' which is paid beyond all these because of fertility or because of public necessity, which will also be ordinary, as below, the same, law 1, for that which would be canonical for persons per patrimony and before this law, as above, title 1, law 1. And note that the Romans, before the birth of Christ, counted years from the indictment, the Hebrews from the flood, the Greeks from the Hercules game which was held every four years on Mount Olympus. But today all Christians from the years of the Lord's incarnation and the emperor, as in the authentic, as proposed.
s All possessors, take it, that is, of those who are not compelled to bring what they owe.
t With delegation, that is, a precept made through delegation and only by the prince, as below, concerning the excuse of municipal, law 'it pleased', and law 'private', as above.
u Over-indictment, otherwise named over-indicated, title 1, law 3, and then oppose as in, namely, Rica, otherwise indictment, and otherwise there are two parts of the over-indicated, as below, concerning the perfect, of the divine, august, law 2, and final.
x Canons, that is, ordinary; for a canon is a rule. Hence exactors are called 'canonicarii', as in the authentic, concerning collection, paragraph, and in this.
y Rather, electively, because thus the canonical is paid because no one.
z Should be demanded, but he excuses himself as subjoined, as below, title 11, law 1, and above, concerning the perfect, of the divine, august, law 2, and final. Different if it were extraordinary, as below, concerning collection.
a Of the sacred patrimony, if you say because of the field, below, concerning the collection of funds, paragraph, law 1, and above, concerning the holy, ecclesiastical, law 1, it pleases. But solution, as below, title 11, law final. Note, but if you say for our house, which is true, then as above, concerning the perfect of the divine, august, law 2, paragraph, final.
for that which they promised to be undoubtedly suitable for themselves, which arrangement they shall observe in perpetuity, the sacrosanct Church of Thessalonica being excepted, so that, however, it is known most clearly that only the mode of capitation is to be relieved by the benefit of my name, and the republic is not to be harmed by the abuse of the ecclesiastical name by the burdening of the tributes of strangers.
All persons whosoever possess by any title whatsoever, which the delegation regarding the indictment seems to have embraced, shall be compelled to contribute as canons, and so that there may be no doubt, we decree by this most clear definition that it shall be demanded rather by the name of 'canon'. Therefore, let no one
