...desiring such things, they are called by the masses Gramatiste grammarians or phiastri quack-philosophers rather than Christicole Christ-worshippers. But now, since this most devout book has recently come to light for the common benefit of Christians, I deemed it just that, protected by your patronage, it might enjoy a better air. Nor could I persuade myself to whom I might better, more worthily, or more gratefully dedicate this Book of Spiritual Grace than to you, Deodata, most illustrious and religious virgin, and most filled with the grace of God, you who, breathed upon by the divine spirit, cast aside the riches of fortune, the power of command, the splendor of offspring, and the delights of the body to enter the most observant seraphic religion referring to the Franciscan order with the greatest humility of soul. You have adorned it so much with your character and the sanctity of your life that I find no one to whom you might be compared in this unhappy age, for you abound in so many excellent gifts of body and soul. We have added, moreover, the notable Gospel of Nicodemus, who was present at the Lord's Passion, to be read most gratefully; it discusses the secret descent of Christ to Hell for the devotion of the faithful, according to the testimony of those who were resurrected. Nor is the Epistle of Lentulus to the Roman Senate regarding the person and character of Christ missing. Added to these also is that wondrous vision of the Prophet Isaiah regarding the mystery of the Trinity and redemption, which has been hidden until now. Furthermore, the vision of Saint Albert regarding the meritorious rules of life, and finally the renowned prophecy of the Erythraean Sibyl for the greater confirmation of our faith. When you have read these with a cheerful face and cherished them with your unique patronage, you will not only attain great delight of soul from them, but you will also provide authority to the work, and you will easily perceive me to be entirely dedicated to your lordship, and most obedient to all your wishes. Farewell.
