If the remarkable deeds of heroes deserve
To be celebrated with eternal praise,
And if the monuments of the ancient sages are full of them,
Then the well-performed deeds of the ancients are pleasing.
For by these examples, just as if spurred by a goad, each person is moved
To gain honor through noble deeds.
Thus, true wisdom is considered to come from other examples,
Learning what is useful and what is harmful to you.
Add to this that in this mirror you can see what good deeds
Follow with manifold praise as a reward.
Why should names not be sent to perpetual fame,
And learned erasure note the work of writers?
The deeds of matrons, to be wondered at by all throughout the world,
Some to be loved by you, and some to be held in hatred,
Are such as our Boccaccio provides, excellent reader.
