yet I will point them out to the readers, so that, being warned, they may notice and weigh them better. In revising the manuscript, in order to have it more correct, faithful diligence has been applied. We have also restored the Greek original: "Græca" with the help of scholars, as far as was permitted. Yet I do not profess that everything has been purged. For we did not dare to change things rashly where the certain truth was not established for us, even if we conjectured that a mistake sometimes lay hidden. Since, indeed, diagrams original: "schemata" contribute much to the knowledge of this art, we have taken care to have them cut in a more elegant form than they appear in the Florentine copy original: "Florentino exemplari". In collecting and arranging the Index, we fear more that someone might criticize our immoderate labor than complain of negligence. For it is quite copious. Yet, so that no one may think we have exceeded the measure, we have followed this plan, that by comparing more places among themselves, the reader might more easily understand one with the help of another. We have also added an Index of Greek terms, if anyone by chance might require it. We have borrowed the titles inscribed on the diagrams from the Italian translation; for they are not Vitruvius's. The words which Io. Iucundus Giovanni Giocondo, a 16th-century friar and scholar who edited Vitruvius either replaced or added, we have left; but included with these marks A small printer's mark or symbol resembling a bracketed sign, so that they might be distinguished. Now I ask the studious readers that they favor our diligence and, wherever a slight error has been committed, they grant pardon.
