Nor do I profess that all things have been purified. For we have not dared to change rashly where the certain truth was not clear to us, even if we conjectured that an error sometimes lay beneath. But because diagrams original: "schemata" contribute much to the knowledge of this art, we have taken care to have them cut in a more elegant form than they are seen in the Florentine copy. In collecting and arranging the Index, we fear more that someone might criticize our excessive labor than complain of negligence. For it is quite copious. Lest anyone think that we have exceeded the measure, we followed this plan, so that the reader, by comparing many places with each other, might understand one more easily by the help of the other. We have also added an Index of Greek terms, in case anyone might require it. We have borrowed the titles inscribed on the diagrams from the Italian version, for they are not by Vitruvius. The words which Jo. Jucundus either restored or added, we have left, truly enclosed with these marks an image-desc marks the position of printer's brackets, so that they might be distinguished. Now I ask of studious readers that they favor our diligence: and if by anyone a small error is found, they may forgive it.
