We also hope that our annotations, in which we have explained the fabrication of these machines, will not be ungrateful to students, and we have taken care to teach those things as simply and briefly as the subject matter itself allowed us. And because we noticed that many desired the little book on the Observations of Comets, inscribed long ago by us to the most famous man Erasmus Ebner, we judged it worthy, because of the similarity of the subject, that we should append it to these little books. I have proposed to myself, as the most abundant and greatest fruit of this labor of mine, if my work should please you, however small, which I contribute in this my extreme old age, to either help or commend these arts. You, according to your excellent prudence and humanity, will continue to protect, foster, and adorn these studies (which you received, as if handed down from your ancestors, not without great praise, so that you might practice them): doubting not at all that this diligence and generosity of yours, in preserving these divine gifts, is pleasing to the Creator and Governor of all things Himself, and is salutary for the Republic. May God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose hand and protection are the hearts of magistrates, happily govern your life and keep you for the common utility of the Republic and His Church, lest barbarism and hypocrisy seize the rudders of affairs for themselves, and we, with all posterity, be put in the gravest danger.
