YOU HAVE, most dear brothers & colleagues, the Catechism, which I have written in these days (by the instruction of the ministers of the Church of Zurich, my most respected and beloved masters, brothers, and fellow ministers), for the benefit of the youth or the Zurich school, over which you have now presided with great praise and much fruit for many years. It will perhaps seem sufficiently lengthy: but you are not unaware that it was entrusted to me to treat a little more fully those individual things which were very briefly touched upon in the smaller Catechism, and also that I should pave the way for them toward the Compendium of the Christian religion, which is itself lectured upon by you. I will perhaps appear in this Catechism of mine to differ greatly from the treatment of others on this subject, as I propose some questions neither proposed nor treated in such a way by others, and even, with not a few testimonies of the scriptures noted, constantly referring them back to the holy scriptures.
