most excellent and abundant goods: which we ought to expect and even ask for from him alone, and neither expect nor ask for from foreign gods.
I. What, in turn, does God require of us, and what is that duty of ours?
R. That we willingly acknowledge these things, furthermore receive them with true faith, and adhere to this God, our covenant partner, with a sincere and whole heart. Therefore, this is our duty: that we hang uniquely from him alone, run to him in all our necessities, trust in him, and revere and love him as our father, lord, and only savior. Or, to express this same thing in another way and more briefly, our duty is that we worship this God with legitimate worship, and indeed him alone, with all other gods rejected, since he alone suffices for all men in whatever prayers they may have.
Of true and legitimate worship of God.
I. Explain here to me what seems to you the legitimate worship of God?
R. That which is referred to God alone, and finally is directed entirely by men according to the norm or rule of the divine word. For acts of worship undertaken by our own will or our own judgment, and bestowed upon creatures, are illegitimate and false worship.
