is that true and legitimate worship of God?
R. It is simple, indeed, but for the sake of teaching it is said to be twofold, namely internal and external. Internal worship revolves in the soul of man and an enlightened mind, consisting in true faith and obedience, in fear and love, and reverence for the divinity: from which arises true adoration, confession, and praise of God, likewise invocation, thanksgiving, and an accurate study of justice, innocence, temperance, and benevolence. Furthermore, external worship exists from the internal, and is exhibited to God alone, especially in rites instituted by him.
I. But those who firmly persist in this covenant of God, how are they called in common?
R. Religious and covenant-members, friends, and associates of God.
I. Does this covenant, therefore, make us monks, who have hitherto called themselves alone religious?
R. They have wrongly called themselves religious. Covenant-members of God are called religious for this reason: because, bound by this bond of piety, they are as if connected and bound to God. From whence religion itself received its name, derived from the word for the bond of piety, because God has bound man to himself and constrained him with piety: because it is necessary for us to serve him as Lord and
