obey him as a father. Moreover, since monks choose for themselves other lords and fathers, and likewise other rules or forms of living, foreign to the unique heavenly father and the unique rule of God's word, and furthermore even pronounce foreign vows to creatures, the noble name of religion does not fit them in the least. Certainly, just as religion is the worship of the true God, so is superstition [the worship] of a false one. Those are therefore superstitious who, content with neither God alone nor his unique word and worship, worship many and false gods, and indeed with worship invented by the will and judgment of men. These very ones in the scriptures are called both adulterers and fornicators, and are condemned as treacherous and sacrilegious profaners of the covenant.
