and indeed by the Law, by which the chapters of the covenant, just mentioned in passing, are explained more copiously, and true religion and the true worship of God are illustrated most elegantly.
I. But since there is one law of nature, another the law of God, another the law of men, and in these also a diversity is found, of which law are you speaking to me?
R. Of the law of God, which is the expressed will of God, commanding those things which are holy or pleasing to God, and prohibiting the contrary.
The Law indeed.
I. However, since there are many laws scattered here and there through the sacred book, who will easily be able to collect and know them all?
R. God himself, the lover of men, took thought for the present weakness of men, and he himself descended with great majesty to Mount Sinai, in the desert, where a huge crowd of the Israelites, his chosen people, was collected, to whom he himself with his own mouth and most significant voice promulgated the law, which he comprehended in ten words or chapters, from whence it found the name of Decalogue, and concluded all laws into these ten precepts, and left to the whole world a Compendium of laws. The Hebrews call the law a directorium a guide, because it directs any man whatsoever in the way of the Lord. Others think the Law is said to be from legendo reading, in that it is read publicly, so that it may be known and observed by all.
