diligence, both in apprehending and convicting these heretics and authors of false religion, of whatever place and order they may be; in which matter you will follow the authority of our Edicts and mandates. † Beware also again and again, that you have no regard for persons, whether by dissimulation or by remission of punishment, that which we have heard of some of your order, who act in such a way, and do so, as if they were of the number of those against whom it was necessary to take action. But if we perceive you to act otherwise than we wish, in this we want you warned, that you will be the first whom we will pursue with punishments and tortures, so that you may be an example to the others.
