We confess that God created the world once in such a way that He is its perpetual governor, to the extent that nothing can happen or come to pass without His counsel and providence. And although Satan and the reprobate strive for the confusion of all things, and even the faithful themselves overturn the right order by their own sins: yet we acknowledge God, as the supreme prince and lord of all, to convert evils into good: and finally to rule all things as if by certain secret reins, and to moderate them in a certain admirable manner, which we ought to adore with all submission of mind: because we cannot comprehend it with our mind.

We confess that man was created in the image of God, that is, endowed with full integrity of spirit, of will, and of all the parts, faculties, and senses of the soul: but that all our corruption, and the vices with which we labor, flowed from the fact that Adam, the father of all men, by his rebellion alienated himself from God, and having abandoned the source of life and all good things, made himself subject to all miseries. Whence it comes about that we are each born infected with original sin, and from the very womb of the mother, cursed and condemned by God, not only because of another's delinquency, but because of the depravity which is within us, even when it does not appear.

We confess that by original sin is comprehended the blindness of the mind and the perversity of the heart, to the extent that we are utterly stripped and destitute of those things which pertain to eternal life, and all natural gifts themselves are in us depraved and contaminated.
