The power of all such is placed in this, that they rule the people committed to them from the word of God, so that Jesus Christ may always remain the supreme Pastor and the sole Lord of His Church, and His voice alone be heard. Therefore, we execrate that hierarchia hierarchy which they call Papal, as a diabolical confusion, established for this reason: that God Himself might be despised, and the Christian religion be exposed to mockery and opprobrium.
We confess that our weakness requires that the Sacraments be added to the preaching of the Word, as seals by which the promises of God may be sealed in our hearts. And that two such Sacraments were ordained by Christ: namely, Baptism and the Supper of the Lord. The former, indeed, to open to us access into the Church of God; the latter, however, to keep us in it. Those five other Sacraments devised by the Papists, and born first in their own brains, we repudiate.
Although the Sacraments serve as a pledge for us, so that we may be made secure concerning the promises of God, yet we acknowledge that they would be useless to us unless the Holy Spirit rendered them effective in us, as instruments: so that our confidence, directed toward creatures, might not be separated from God. Moreover, we also confess that the Sacraments are depraved and perverted when they are not referred to this goal: that we seek in Christ whatever is required for our salvation. And as often as they are adapted to a use other than that we might fix all our faith deeply in Him. Furthermore, since the promise of adoption is extended even to the posterity of the faithful, we acknowledge that it is necessary for the infants of the faithful to be received into the Church
