DIALECTICAE.
species: as, Animal to man, horse, lion: Tree to cherry, medlar, and oak.
Species.
2. Species is that which is contained under a genus: as under Animal is contained, as we just saw, man, horse, eagle, dolphin, and almost infinite others. Under Metal, gold, silver, copper, tin, and others of that kind.
Differentia.
3. Differentia is that which distinguishes species of the same genus from one another: as reason distinguishes man from other brute animals.
Proprium.
4. Proprium is that which belongs to one species only, and to the whole of it: as to speak, to count, to laugh belong to one man, and to every man.
Accidens.
5. Accidens, which is present and absent without the corruption of its subject to which it happens: as, heat can be present and absent in water without its detriment, so that the water still remains water in its substance. These are the things about predicables: now follow the predicaments.
