Gracchus was seditious.
Therefore he was justly killed. The major proposition is missing here, which was:
All seditious people are justly killed.
Or the minor, as in this example:
It is lawful to kill seditious people.
Therefore Gracchus was justly killed.
Here the minor proposition is missing, namely this:
Gracchus was seditious.
That proposition is usually omitted in an Enthymeme which is either known to everyone by itself, or is by its nature too weak to prove something firmly.
Orators especially use this quick and expedited kind of arguing. Because of its brevity, the Greeks seem to have called it so. For enthymema a short thought or meditation of the mind to the Greeks is a brief thought and meditation of the mind; as, You are a thief, therefore you should be hanged.
Two parts of the Enthymeme are therefore left: the former of which is called the Antecedent, and the latter the Consequent.
