And again, that by the name of the "new man," the mind restored by the spirit of Christ is signified, there is no one who does not know. It follows that Christ, whom we are commanded to put on, and whom we know to be the express image of the Best and Greatest Father, has taught by his own example what sort of people we ought to be so that we may be approved and please God. Yet, O holy God, how humble, submissive, despised, and rejected was Christ? How sincere a lover of the human race? How obedient, not only as a son but even as a servant of the best and greatest Father? How did he bear not only patient, but even willing, hardships, miseries, and a most grave death? Alien from this nature and character of Christ are those who are impatient of discipline, not to mention poverty, exile, and injuries; who, in these lands where we must fight as in a camp, dodge every labor and danger, and wish to obtain the triumph and the reward before they have descended into the arena, let alone emerged as victors. By a different way was Christ sent into the possession of glory. Alien also from Christ are those who do not obey him when he calls, unless the calling is most convenient and pleasing, which they measure more by their own benefit than that of the church. Alien from Christ are those who are accustomed to be touched by either no care or a very meager care for the flock entrusted to them, and who, having preached every third week, think they have finished their duty, while they chatter about how expert, honest, and constant their listeners are.
