than that this labor of mine may be much more pleasing to many. Since the Lord has conferred upon you alone many excellent gifts, and you excel in the true nobility of your lineage as well as of the greatest and truly heroic virtues, and you have carried yourself thus far in the administration of the most extensive Republic of Bern, so that you are loved and held in the highest regard by all good men, this book of mine cannot but be very pleasing to many, at least in your name, to whom it is dedicated. Moreover, I pray to our Lord God through his only-begotten son Jesus Christ, our only savior and mediator, that he may keep you safe for us for a long time with all yours, and enrich you more and more with his gifts, defend you from evils, and always govern you with his holy spirit.
