Hertel, Jacob · 1562

M. ALB. SULCERI,
By obeying always, toward concord,
Whatever you do, pleasing to God, pleasing to your husband.
Thus from there, the sisters The Fates, whose name is aptly said
Because they spare no one, will not begrudge
Producing the threads of life further.
LOVE or CHARITY,
What surpasses the bonds of chaste love?
What has joined men if not the force of love,
So that they might lead a fragile life in a social bond?
Love dominates keenly over the affections,
Which the Creator once placed in the souls of men
When he had given beginnings to the tender world:
Yet he himself grants preference only to himself,
Desiring to be loved back with heart, soul, and deep senses,
Just as he loved us when we were enemies.
Love is CHRIST: he repaired by the zeal of love
Those whom the dire power of Satan
Held bound in the snares of darkness.
Love is therefore closest to the spouse:
The first Adam proves this, when God had granted to him,
The fabricated companion of his life, Eve.
He says: This bone is fit for my own bones,
Flesh of my flesh: thus man shall leave his parents,
So that he may be the perpetual companion of his spouse.
Such love makes two to be one:
Therefore, the loves of souls which the Lord has joined,
Let man beware of loosening, having been duly joined.
For you, Sulcer, for you, maiden, may the study
Of piety be cultivated in a chaste heart:
The love of the Lord provides joys that never perish.
Whether marriage may turn out well,
Or be agitated by heavy dangers,
May your hearts always cultivate God with solid love.
