With this disaster therefore ac-
cepted, they are forced to resow the
seed as often as this misfortune
happens to them. But with these
inconveniences all having been
overcome, and with this genus having
sprouted as soon as leaves have been
sent forth from the root, especially
when it has begun to have four fibers
and has risen to the width of a finger
from the earth, it is purged of every
herb or shrub of a different kind. For
thistles, caltrops, burdocks, rushes,
twigs, and the rest of the growing
forest of herbs, reserved in place of
fodder for cattle, are removed from
there by hand and rooted out.
Although there are some who allow
the tender thistles to remain, or
who sometimes skip them on purpose
for this reason, that they are said to
be somewhat of an aid to the Woad for
the colors, but with no certain author,
I think negligence is excused thereby.
