NINETEENTH INSTITUTION.
Holy and beautiful is the response of the Angel Gabriel to the questions of Mary. First, whence comes that pure man whom she is about to bear? Second, whence can he be the Son of God, when Mary is a human, a handmaid of the Lord, and how can she bear the eternal, infinite God, Immanuel? Third, whence can the only-begotten Son of God be the man Christ, if the proper Son of God can only be born, conceived, and generated from his own infinite and eternal self? The Angel answered rightly thus: He will be the human Son of David because the Holy Spirit will come upon you and will purify you, and the holy one whom you shall bear shall be of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, the Son of God, Immanuel, and Jesus Christ, Savior, Lord Iehouah Jehovah, our righteousness, the germ of the Lord, will be such because the power of the Most High, or the Word of God, will overshadow you. That is, that only-begotten Son of God, who, subsisting in the form of God, was equal to the eternal Father, assumes the form of a servant—flesh, that is, a humbled man—without sin.
