I will not be burdened to write here what the judgment of that most illustrious man, Doctor Reuchlin, was regarding these books. In his book on the long exile of the Jews, I find these words: "Since," he says, "this impious and wicked cohort has cursed Jehovah as if He were a liar and weak, it has been delivered into a reprobate sense, so that it might continue sins with sins and blasphemies with blasphemies. For as soon as they attack the true and promised Savior, they lacerate the divine majesty, which is common to Him with the Father. They call Christ, our Redeemer, to whom every knee must bow of those who are in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, a magician, an enchanter, a sacrilegious person, and one hanged on a gallows; his mother, the undefiled virgin, they call Harriam dung heap; his disciples, heretics; and finally, us, Gohim gentiles, fools, insane, and deprived of our senses." The atrocity of this crime is easily gathered from the long punishment by which the Lord pursues it. Indeed, they have now become so hardened in the hard habit of sinning that they are carried headlong with a certain pleasure of mind from one wickedness to another. They wrote a book against those who left the sty of the most filthy pigs and fled to the sheepfold of Christ, which they call Welschimodim. Paper would sooner fail me than subject matter for writing; I will pursue only the main points. Therefore, they call him who has cast off circumcision and been washed in the bath of regeneration Meschumad apostate; if a woman, Meschumedes, which is an impious and wicked term denoting an apostate who has defected from the true worship to a false and idolatrous one. They say this heir of the kingdom of heaven will be punished with eternal tortures; they have offense and disgust at his presence and sight, they proclaim his wife a harlot, his children bastards; finally, they despise and detest his entire family as one upon whom a shameful mark has been branded.
