OPINION OF PAUL
OF SAMOSATA.
Paul, who was contemporary with this Manes, being a Samosatene by birth and the bishop of Antioch in Syria, blasphemously said that the Lord was a mere man, and that the indwelling of the Word of God occurred in Him just as it did in each of the prophets. From this, he claimed that two natures exist in Christ, divided and entirely without communion with one another, as if Christ were one being, and the Word of God dwelling in Him were another. These, therefore, are the primary origins of those who wrongly and blasphemously spoke of either one nature or two natures in the Savior Christ, the one to the destruction of His humanity, the other to the destruction of His divinity.
