whosoever attempts to separate the truly balanced and wonderful union. And it signifies not only two natures essentially united, but also united according to the hypostasis, inseparably and at the same time without confusion.
EXPLANATION OF THE
DEFINITION.
The stated definition, by saying "two natures," signifies the difference in kind and the difference in essence of the two natures which have come together, namely the assuming divinity and the assumed humanity. By saying "essentially united," it signifies that the union of the two natures is not to be understood as being by good pleasure or any other conceptual relation, but that these natures together constitute a substance and a subject and a reality which are combined. By saying "by a union according to the hypostasis," it signifies that the humanity was not formed first and then the divinity entered into it, but that at the very moment it existed, the first beginning was united to the divinity.
