Nor are you indeed those who would crave to be praised, or for whom the rotten speech of any flatterer might taste sweet: but rather this, that Christ may always be praised and magnified in you. But here I say only two things: first, that I am so indebted to you that no one would consider it right for me to προφωνεῖν proclaim or dedicate anything to anyone before you; and second, that since you and all your people serve that Christ, for whom and through whom both Joseph and Samson himself were such preeminent men of virtue and happiness; since Christ has attributed a broad empire to you and has adorned your Bern with the light of the Gospel for nearly fifty years now, in such a way that others might be incited not only to imitation afterward, but also that your works themselves, God thus willing, commanding, favoring, and acting, might be brought forth: it is fitting, indeed, to judge that I act correctly and worthily, magnificent Lords, to offer you these first-fruits of my writings, which renew the memory of such great things.
