(especially those which the writers of the New Testament cite from the Old Testament) about which some of our friends (as is wont to happen in the συζητήσει discussion/debate of students and men of letters) were at some time inquiring what I thought, while they themselves sometimes offered their own opinion; they affirmed that my exposition regarding certain points was strongly approved by them. Indeed, to make me believe that this was said by them honestly and without any simulation, the fact is that those same people began to ask that the things I had with me in writing or noted down regarding the interpretation of this or that passage be communicated to them; and they demanded it even for the common and sacrosanct right of friendship. I was partly excusing myself, because they were either scattered in my rough notes or lay unelaborated and hidden in the narrow margins of books, and some things were overwritten and others crossed out (as they were only for me to read when there was need), and often shamefully transparent through the poor quality of the paper: nor was there enough leisure time available for me to transcribe them, or for some servant boy to take them down at home while I dictated; partly (to tell the truth) I did not wish them to be exposed to anyone before they were exposed to you. For to you first and foremost this entire labor of my Theological studies is dedicated, God indeed commanding it, who by his grace through the most ample Bernese Senate, and by the votes of our most loving colleagues, the Pastors of the Church, and the Professors of this school, entrusted this most grateful and holy province to me: and me...
