The order original: τάξις, the necessity original: ἀνάγκη: what is the subject: what and how many are the parts of this book: the distinction between things placed outside the mind, mental concepts original: νοήματα, and those things which are spoken and written.

THE first elements of enunciations and the order original: τάξις of syllogisms, namely the simple terms original: ὅροι which they call terms original: ὅροι, must be recalled distinctly before all else to the Categories original: Κατηγορίας; likewise, the simple words original: τῶν ἐπωνύμων, that is, those which follow the simple terms of the Categories, to the section After the Categories original: τὰ μετὰ τὰς Κατηγορίας, and as the Greeks say, it is beneficial original: ὠφέλιμος. This was the first treatment of all things according to the laws of all things and per se original: κῂ παντὸς, καὶ καθ' αὑτὸ. Next follows the doctrine of enunciating according to order and the same laws. For enunciations or propositions consist of terms, and just as simple terms are in enunciations like a point in a line original: ὡς ἐν γραμμῇ στιγμὴ, so also propositions are in a syllogism like lines in a triangle original: ὡς ἐν τριγώνῳ γραμμαὶ.
From these it is also understood what the subject of this book is.
