...sensible things original: αἰσθητὰ, and the intellect original: νοῦς all intelligible things original: νοητὰ.
Nor should it be passed over in silence that these mental concepts noēmata, or forms eidē, impressed in the soul through knowledge, are called affections pathēmata, when considering human intelligence, which is not simply one act of understanding noēseōs energeia, but is composed from various ideas of mental concepts, namely nouns and verbs. And certainly, forms eidē of this kind impressed upon the soul can also be called affections pathēmata, because the soul receives them in almost the same way that the senses receive the forms of sensible things. They are therefore like certain affections pathēmata, of the kind that are also impressed upon the senses by things affecting the senses.
How mental concepts are called affections.
They differ, however, in the suffering paschein of the mind and the suffering paschein of the sense, because it is not permitted to sense whenever we wish, but it is permitted to understand whenever we wish. It is not permitted to sense whenever we wish because things that strike and affect the sense are not always present; it is permitted to understand whenever we wish because they are at hand, and the forms eidē are indeed within the mind.
Distinction between the suffering of the mind and the suffering of the senses.
Finally, simple mental concepts are deservedly called affections pathēmata, as they are the parts from which enunciations are composed. Such are the words of the mental concepts themselves, just as they are uttered and written. When these are uttered and written without composition, something is understood simply; for truth or falsehood is not attributed to them unless they are composed or divided. They are composed, however, by affirming; they are divided by denying. As soon, therefore, as "is" or "is not" is added to some simple noun, immediately it is either true or false.
