...is disputed whether it is true or false. And it is indeed added, either by reason of ousia substance/essence, as when I say, "God is"; or pote at some time/when by reason of time, as when I say, "The Gallic war is." But let us speak individually about the parts of a statement, namely the noun and the verb, and that in a way accommodated to Dialectic, as has been said: and first about the Noun.
Dialectical definition of a noun. We shall define the noun in a manner accommodated to dialectical use in this way. A noun is a sound that has the power of signifying by human institution without the determination of time, of which no part, if taken separately, has any power of signifying. This definition of the noun is common, that is, it applies to all those species of nouns which we shall enumerate. And in this definition, "sound" is the genus.

Therefore, nouns are not natural sounds, such as those that are in humans and in brute animals, by which certain affections are usually expressed: but they are certain symbols instituted by synthēkēn covenant/convention for the purpose of signifying.

But first of all, one must note that phrase, hēs mēden meros esti sēmantikon kechōrismenon of which no part is significant when separated, by which it is declared that something very simple is signified by uttering a single noun. For just as one thing is not two things (for if one thing were two things, it would be itself, and not itself), so also the noun of one thing, as it is of one, is not the noun of two things, nor is it divisible into several notions. Therefore, the noun, having regard to the one thing signified, is devoid of any sēmantikēs significant part.
