But it must be held that all those things have their place properly at the beginning, for the cause which we have brought forth.

XLIX.

For where the internal and antecedent Cause already makes the disease in act (which is therefore called by some the continens containing or combined cause, that it may be distinguished from the prior), the third indication, the CURATIVE said in species, arises: which commands us to be intent with every effort to drive the disease from the body.

Then, therefore, if the inflammation has not yet ceased by cold astringents, which take away the heat, or if the pain has not been appeased by sedatives, with which cold things are also sometimes mixed (such as when the greater houseleek boiled in milk is held in the mouth), and it has not yet suppurated: then one must persist further in these, and as will follow shortly, at the end one must pass from these to discutient [dispersing] remedies.

So also, if in another species of defluxion, after those things which are applied by reason of the cause have been recounted, the pain does not yet cease: one must use those things which evacuate by any reason the author of the pain and tumor that has slipped in by the humor.

Sensibly indeed, through hot medicines which draw out phlegm through the mouth and look toward the affected part. From which indeed a wash is prepared, or a little mass is prepared and applied to the teeth. In this kind, though there are many, by common consent pyrethrum pellitory root holds the first place.

LII.

The evacuation of them is instituted insensibly by the help of those things which, because they are hot, dissipate and discuss [disperse] the collected matter. Among which aqua Vita brandy/distilled spirit works most quickly.
