Whatever opens removes the disease, for to open is to dissolve the obstruction.
XLII.
Things correspond to the causes: namely, attenuating agents for thick humors, smoothing agents for rough ones, rarefying agents for dense ones, dilating agents for constricting ones, softening agents for hard ones, resolving agents for concrete ones, and cleansing, evacuating, or excretion-promoting agents for those that are resolved.
XLIII.
Account is also taken of the symptoms if they are urgent, such as pain, prostration of strength, and difficulty in breathing, which are the primary ones. To these is added the observation of age and sex, all of which must be considered in medical treatment, since not all medicines are suitable for everyone. Therefore, we do not hesitate to call certain medicines "childish" puerilia which suit children; others "feminine" γυναικεῖα which suit women; then "masculine" ἀνδρεῖα which suit men; a fourth type "hermaphroditic" ἑρμαφροδιτικὰ which suit either sex; and the last "all-healing" πανχρησὰ which equally and particularly free every sex and age suffering from these obstructions.
XLIV.
This is the general method of curing. Now let us proceed to the particular: in which the antecedent causes are first to be diminished, with the external ones having been inhibited first; then, once the proximate cause is removed, the disease will cease.
XLV.
Therefore, the diet must be thin. All flatulent, cold, and viscous things are to be avoided. Dairy products, legumes, cheese, lettuce, melons, medlars, both serviceberries, chestnuts, mushrooms, and seasonal fruits are not to be eaten. Meats, unless rarely, may be eaten roasted. All fish are to be condemned.
