Especially the ὀστρακόδερμα καὶ μάλακια shellfish and soft-bodied creatures of Aristotle, such as oysters and lampreys, are to be shunned. New, red, turbid, or vaporous wine should not be tasted, even with the tips of the lips; these things are to be prohibited, kept away, and removed.
XLVI.
The bread should be wheat and well-leavened. Let them drink ὀλιγοφόρου a small amount soberly and at the right time. Nasturtium, mustard, alexanders, origanum, calamint, pennyroyal, savory, and anise should be cooked in broths and soups. The sick should almost exclusively take pleasure in, be refreshed by, and use these. If their strength allows, they should often endure fasting. They should conquer, overcome, and defeat sloth with movement, gluttony with frugality, drunkenness with temperance, and desire with reason and virtue. Once cold things are removed, hot, discussing, and softening epithemata external medicinal applications should be applied. They should put aside and reject the ἰσχυομανίαν tight binding of the loins and the strong girdle at the earliest possible time. They should walk about unencumbered and go about freely. Let these things be said, established, and defended by me as correctly instituted.
XLVII.
Diligence must be applied in choosing the air, since nothing changes a man and his temperature more quickly: therefore, cold and very hot air, as well as dry and turbid, should not be granted; but a mild, tepid, gentle, clear, and pleasant air should be chosen, and if the absolute best cannot be had everywhere, then command the least vicious one.
XLVIII.
First, with regard to age, for children suffering from obstruction, honey is more suitable than vinegar, although vinegar cuts more powerfully. Likewise, chamomile and oil of sweet almonds are more suitable than rhubarb, although rhubarb opens more quickly: for the former does so without pain; the latter, even in small quantity, cuts and opens with pain. Externally, however, we apply butter to the lower abdomen to relax the passages more safely than goose fat, although the latter penetrates more. We do not, however, grant them vomiting or purgatives in any way.
