The hermaphroditic medicines that are taken internally either powerfully resolve the passages or do so slowly and gradually. Of the former type are the chemical, i.e., clarified liquors: such as spirit of vitriol, tincture of saffron, rhubarb, and oils of anise, clove, etc., which, if well-prepared and falling into the hands of a skilled physician, may justly be called panchresta all-healing. They are administered now in 4, now in 6, now in 10 drops with a suitable humor.

Among the common, but nonetheless more tested and sometimes safer ἑρμαφροδιτικὰ hermaphroditic medicines, practitioners highly recommend hiera simplex and diacalamint. There is also no reason why we should reject squill vinegar and the honey-water of the same, which attenuate thick juices, cleanse glutinous ones, and promote excretion, etc. Some praise experiments of the moderns, others praise others. Our sounder physicians most often and most happily use Gesner's Oxymel Elleboratum against obstructions. For it has a moderate capacity to attenuate and cut humors, both the thicker and the viscous ones, and for the sake of cleansing; and especially for what they call 'metaporopoiesis,' that is, using it to bring them from the center to the surface. Since metaporopoiesis (that is, drawing humors from the center to the surface and their proper excretory channels) is the primary goal of our intention, I owe immortal thanks to Gesner (alas, sooner than I would have wished, now dead) for this oxymel of his, and I publicly defend it under his name as a most useful remedy against obstructions.

Among the all-healing remedies for this disease, Galen highly recommends his oxymel; he says in his book on the preservation of health that it is suitable for children, the elderly, and all natures alike for expediting obstructions.
