no less than just, and to despise and undervalue all evils for the love of Christ, and to give themselves entirely to Christ. It will remind the latter of their duty, with the examples of the most excellent martyrs and of Christ our Lord himself set before them, and having considered the cause of public evils, it will recall them to the right path. But let the judgment of others be on these matters; it was my intention, at least, to provide a reason for the edition. Now, therefore, I return to you (magnificent Lord), and I ask that you receive this small ἀντίδωρον reciprocal gift, if it can even obtain the name of ἀντίδωρον reciprocal gift, with the same spirit as Alexander the Great once received water taken up in both hands, and that you remember that proverb which bids one not to measure gifts of this kind by their price, and that you will have made an entrance for me to attempt greater things. I pray to God, the Best and Greatest, through his only son our Lord Jesus Christ, that he might deign to confirm and prosper for you, yours, and your country—in return for the services you provide among your ἀρισέυας noble peers/warriors and for the wholesome counsels you provide your country—firm and long-lasting health, and above all, his grace. Amen. Farewell, magnificent and generous Lord. Given at Zurich, in the metropolis of the Swiss, on the 8th day before the Ides of January, 1578.
