A detailed chorographic map of the region surrounding Lake Geneva (Lacus Lemannus), featuring topographical illustrations of mountains, forests, towns, and the lake itself. The map is framed by heraldic shields of various Swiss and regional territories along the top and right margins. A cartouche in the upper right contains a Latin poem.
A decorative cartouche in the upper right corner contains the text: "On the chorographic tables of the city and territory of Bern, written by the doctor of medicine, Master Thomas Schöpf," followed by a poem.
On the chorographic tables of the city and territory
of Bern, written by Dr. Thomas Schöpf.When God grants joyful peace to the lands and calm rest
To the kingdoms of the world and to the Empires:
Indeed, the Church desires that she should have in the lands
Safe seats and her own hospitality.
Therefore, that field which was once the increased possession of the Bernese
Is now made a vast territory by its boundary.
Whether you look at the middle sun, or the seven stars i.e., the North, the seven stars of the Great Bear constellation,
Or the eastern regions, or the western sites.
As the painted tables, which the learned Schöpf offers,
Show to your eyes, and place before them.
The cause is that this land cultivated a seat for holy peoples,
And gave hospitality to a faithful one.
Therefore, whoever loves Christ, the brothers, and the faithful,
Render prayers to God from your whole heart.
Pay your pious vows to God, and pray that He may always
Protect the House, and thus cherish His own.
