A decorative initial Q containing floral patterns.Qvamuvis Although noble Pilgrim, such a deep connection is implanted in the very nature of humanity that men desire and ought to love and cherish one another throughout their entire lives; nevertheless, I do not know by what reasoning it comes to pass that each person, out of such a great multitude of men, always chooses certain individuals with whom to cultivate and cement a firm and unfeigned friendship, unless one were to say this happens through the influence of the stars, the constant association of daily life, equality of character, or the love of virtue—towards which one person strives more fervently than another—or perhaps by some secret συμπάθεια sympathy/affinity. Let others judge as they may. For my part, I can affirm from the depth of my heart that from the time when it fell to my lot to live with you at home among your parents, and abroad in the Academies, I have known no one more faithful, more observant of my character, more upright in morals, and more fervent in the pursuit of virtue than you alone. By these exceptional gifts of your spirit, you have so bound me to you that I have deemed you alone worthy, over all others whom I have known as my closest friends, to whom I might dedicate these conclusions. I hope they will be useful to you one day if, as you advance further in the most sacred study of law (to which I exhort you to strive with all your might), you should happen upon this subject, and learn that nothing contrary to the laws has been set forth here. You will receive what is offered with a grateful heart. You will do this if you continue to regard me with your customary love and benevolence. Farewell.
