...correspond to the body. If your parents grant you clothing of a more elegant sort, do not contemplate yourself with reflected eyes, nor exult with joy, nor show it off to others: for the one is the way of apes, the other of peacocks. Let others admire; do not you know that you are well-dressed. The greater the fortune, the more lovable is modesty. For those of more humble condition, it may be granted by way of consolation to take moderate pleasure in themselves. But the wealthy person who displays the splendor of his attire reproaches others for their misery and stirs up envy against himself.
Temple
As often as you pass the doors of a temple, uncover your head. Do not walk through the sacred building unless you call upon Christ with similar religion, at least with a short prayer, and that with head uncovered and both knees bent. When the sacred rites are performed, it is becoming to compose the whole habit of the body for religion. Think that Christ is present there with countless thousands of angels. And if anyone, about to address a human king while a crown of nobles stands around, should neither uncover his head nor bend his knee, he would be considered not just a rustic, but a madman by everyone. How much more is it so to have the head covered and knees erect where that King of kings is present, the immortal and the giver of immortality, where ethereal spirits stand around in veneration? Nor does it matter if you do not see them; they see you. It is no less certain that they are present than if you saw them with bodily eyes. For the eyes of faith perceive more certainly than those of the flesh.
