That is the foundation and guardian of all peace. That peace of Christ is that which, acknowledging the true God and true man, and thus our only Mediator before the Father, tastes everything from His word in faith, and hopes for all its salvation from His perfect obedience. This is the peace which we desire, which we offer to all men. But so that you are not deceived by the name of an insidious peace, you must also be on guard again and again. For the rest, I consider that I owe this to you, brothers, and to the French Churches. For the Belgic Churches themselves have, by the grace of God, their own men who will undertake their patronage and defend them with doctrine, and who will not let this man leave without a response. But since it pleased God the Father of mercies that a Frenchman in France should function in the holy office of an Evangelical Pastor, and should announce to you from the word of God that doctrine which Osiander anathematizes as not sufficiently sincere, and which others, his associates, even anathematize as erroneous, I cannot, Brothers, unless I wish to be deemed a plain impostor and ψευδοπροφήτης false prophet, fail to defend it with all my might, for which I am prepared, if the Lord so wills, to pour out my very life. Therefore, when we see that an account of our faith is demanded, it must certainly be rendered according to the precept of Peter. For he manages this cause so cunningly that, while attributing to you (that is, to the flock and the little sheep, as he calls them) praises of singular piety toward God, and of patience, he ascribes the whole blame for the errors (in which, if it pleases God, he wishes the French and reformed Churches of Christ to be involved) to us Pastors. Thus he separates us Pastors from you, the sheep, and you, the sheep, from us.
