There are many things pleasing to the Lord of heaven, and gifts grateful to the owed duty by which pious mortals affect Him, which God also willed to be offered to Himself by salutary commands, with ready minds, as those things which proceed well. But the almighty Creator of all things approves of nothing more than these three things: brothers, indeed, with a unanimous heart, and those who are also in concord, and love in return those neighbors whom they hold dear through good deeds. Finally, He favors in the first place the love of a husband and wife, and by these three things, men are appeased with the greatest leader of the gods. O happy, therefore, above and beyond others, he who gains joys with great interest in the bridal chamber, who obtains a peaceful and harmless marriage, to whom a most excellent spouse has likewise fallen, to whom a litigious wife's dowry is not given at the same time, by which contract fortune ends daily: but he to whom rest, and also shining peace, flows without crime through a dear spouse, he is happy, and the King of the heavens strongly loves him, whom He then makes a participant of the ether; finally, the husband takes away innumerable fruits from the peace-bearing bed with his companion. The sacred voice of the Holy Spirit testifies to this, which neither deceives nor is deceived. Therefore, whoever you are, do not despise the law of a legitimate marriage, but let it be venerable as long as a portion of the breath of life remains.
