ON THE SACRED WEDDING
OF THE MAN OUTSTANDING IN THE SKILL OF THE BETTER ARTS AND IN THE NOBILITY OF VIRTUES, MR. IOANNES STRIDACHER OF TETTNANG, ORDINARY PROFESSOR OF ETHICS IN THE FLOURISHING ACADEMY OF THE CARINTHIANS:
to be celebrated with the most chaste and choice maiden AGATHA SCHNELLINA of Tettnang, at Tettnang, on the 7th of November, in the sixteenth century from the Incarnate Word, completing after 20 years,
composed by
MATTHAEUS HERTER
of Tettnang.
A few poems are to be spoken for the man preparing the social festival of the bridal chamber, and who holds the name Stridacher from his people, and for his Nymph created from a swift lineage, even if my Muse is rustic, which, since it has given me only to sing with a slender hemlock-pipe a symbol of simple, humble poetry small things lacking in gravity, pardon must be applied all the more. I shall compose the Hymenial nuptial bonds of the new marriage, which the beautiful new bride blesses, the mother of Aeneas Venus having embraced the minds of both husband and wife: their own little boy Cupid gave them strength. Muse, recount to me the causes, by what divinity relying, or by what deceit did Cytherea Venus dare to meditate upon the fires with which she penetrates the bones and burns the marrow of the man distinguished by piety and dedicated to his servants.
