The disease itself, since it is an ulceration, requires at the beginning medicines endowed with a cleansing faculty, to which, in the augmentation phase, consolidating agents should be mixed. In the decline, only consolidating agents have a place. It would be tedious to enumerate examples of each here.
XXXVI.
Remedies are required according to whether the ulcer exists in the upper or lower parts; in the former case, they are taken through the mouth, while in the latter, they are injected through the bowels.
XXXVII.
If symptoms like pain and wakefulness are too pressing, one must have recourse to painkillers and sleep-inducing agents. Since these do more harm than good when used without reason, they must be administered with the utmost caution.
