123. If the pain becomes more violent, it can be eased with anodynes pain-relieving agents.
124. Such anodynes should be those that exert their powers without erosion and acrimony.
125. For erosive agents, however much they may seem to soothe, contribute less, as they have nothing that softens or extracts fixed humors, such as garlic, mustard, etc.
126. Those which are helpful are either lighter or more violent.
127. Among the lighter ones, in a hot cause, are mullein flowers, lentils, water-lily, applied warmly.
128. For this purpose, the mere profusion of very cold water, or snow, has often been useful.
129. But psyllium fleawort seed, macerated in water and kneaded, and mixed with barley flour, helps miraculously.
130. In a cold cause, oil is suitable in which elecampane, birthwort, gentian, rosemary, and germander are boiled.
131. Likewise, oil in which marsh mallow root, or fox, or earthworms have been boiled, although these are lighter.
132. Also praised in this category is radish oil, or oil in which galbanum a pungent resin has been dissolved.
133. A remedy that was once considered famous is prepared from a handful of breadcrumb dissolved in woman's milk with half a drachm of saffron added.
134. More violent anodynes are cerates prepared from opium, which, however, should only be used in extreme necessity.
135. The other type of symptom is knotty swelling.
136. Therefore, if the affection has turned into tophi stony deposits or knots, the impacted humors must be considered.
137. For knots produced by a hot intemperance must be resolved by moderately heating and dissolving agents.
138. Such are those described from cinnabar, flower of salt, and metallic substances.
139. If thicker and cruder humors are carried to the joints, they are to be treated with thinning and more violently heating agents.
140. A noble remedy for removing knots is very sharp, aged cheese macerated in a decoction of salted pig's leg.
