or finally, some matter exits beyond custom: due to this manifold difference, various and diverse affections arise.

For if semen (for example) exits, it is called gonorrhea a seminal discharge: if it is another matter, it will be called by another name.

Such matter flows forth, however, if there is no vice in the uterus itself, whether it is discharging itself through the uterus from the whole body, or from one or more parts.

When it flows from the whole, we name it a feminine discharge. When from another part, it almost lacks a name. When it arises from a disease of the uterus, we call it a uterine discharge.

But it is not our purpose at present to discuss these lesions, for we have determined to speak only of suppressed menses.

Moreover, the suppression of καταμηνίων menstruation is nothing other than a retention against nature (for that which occurs due to old age is not morbid, just as old age itself is not) of that blood which is accustomed to be evacuated every month, when all things occur naturally.

There is great disagreement among Physicians in assigning the causes, since some reduce them to four, others to three, and others to two classes of causes.

We shall reduce them to two chief heads, so that the suppression of menstru-
