In general, this affliction is easily recognized, since the patient himself perceives an expansive pain around the joints of the feet.

But those things that argue for the differences in causes are taken partly from the triple genus of symptoms, partly from the nature of preceding diseases, and some from causes both external and internal, and these being natural or contrary to nature.

Thus, a sanguineous gout is denoted by a throbbing pain with swelling and redness; the retention of blood contrary to nature in the uterus or hemorrhoids; a preceding continued fever; plethora an excess of bodily fluids; a flourishing age; a hot and humid temperament; the spring season; a previous way of life consisting of foods of good juice; and a delight in cold things.
XXVII.
A bilious gout is shown by a sharper pain; yellow and bilious urine; a color tending toward lemon or even somewhat pale and reddish; a bitter taste in the mouth; less evident swelling; a tertian fever or other preceding acute diseases; a youthful age; a hot and dry temperament; the summer season; a heating diet; and relief from applied cold things.
XXVIII.
A pituitous characterized by phlegm or mucus gout is signified by a more remiss pain with edematous swelling; the retention of phlegm that was previously accustomed to be purged; a color little changed from the natural; an insipid, watery taste in the mouth, or a salty taste denoting salty phlegm; a trace of a pressing finger remaining in the affected part pitting edema;
